Our Approach to Couples & Relationship Therapy

At San Diego Couples & Family Therapy, our approach is grounded in a deep understanding of how relationships respond under stress, and how they can heal when emotional safety, structure, and meaning are restored.

Many couples seek therapy feeling stuck in recurring conflict, emotional distance, or a growing sense of disconnection. Others arrive after betrayal, major transitions, or years of feeling unheard. In most cases, the problem is not a lack of love or effort but being caught in relational patterns that neither partner fully understands nor knows how to shift.

My role as a couple’s therapist is to help you slow those patterns down, make sense of what is happening beneath the surface, and create new ways of relating that foster clarity, trust, and connection.

A Structured, Relationship-Focused Way of Working

My work is informed by long-term clinical experience and research on relationship stability, emotional regulation, and attachment. I work in a structured and relational way, meaning sessions are intentional, guided, and emotionally grounded.

In therapy, we focus on:

  • Identifying interaction patterns that lead to escalation, withdrawal, or stalemate
  • Strengthening emotional safety so difficult conversations can occur without defensiveness or shutdown
  • Improving communication by addressing what interferes with listening and responsiveness
  • Supporting repair after emotional injury, including breaches of trust
  • Helping couples navigate differences without losing respect, closeness, or themselves

Rather than working only at the level of arguments, we attend to the emotional and relational meanings that give those moments their intensity.

The Role of Emotion and Attachment

Emotions play a central role in how partners respond to one another, especially during moments of stress or vulnerability. Attachment-informed and emotion-focused perspectives help clarify why certain interactions escalate quickly, why some partners withdraw, and why others feel unseen or unheard.

Emotion is not treated as an end in itself, but as a pathway toward understanding, responsibility, and repair, helping couples move from reactivity into choice.

What It Is Like to Work with Me

Clients often describe our work as thoughtful, grounded, and emotionally containing. I am active in sessions, helping slow conversations down, interrupt unhelpful dynamics, and name what is happening when words alone are not enough.

At the same time, I deeply respect your pace, your background, and your values. Therapy with me balances emotional depth with structure, clarity, and practical guidance.

Therapy as a Process of Growth

Couples do not come to therapy because they have failed. They come because something meaningful matters and feels at risk.

Whether you are navigating chronic conflict, emotional distance, or uncertainty about your relationship, therapy offers a space to understand yourselves and each other more honestly, and to rebuild connection with intention and care.

Conflict & Repair in Couples Therapy

In couples therapy, conflict is not avoided or minimized, it is understood. We explore what drives recurring disagreements, what each partner is protecting, and how emotional injuries accumulate when repair does not occur. As couples learn to interrupt unhelpful patterns and engage in repair, conflict becomes less about winning or withdrawing, and more about understanding, responsiveness, and choice.
